Annette Taddeo campaign brings in $10,000 in June, mostly from grassroots fundraising
Annette Taddeo added more than $10,000 in June to her run to keep her seat representing Florida Senate District 40, and the majority of it came through grassroots fundraising.
So far, she’s running unopposed.
Last month’s haul marked the largest single-month gain of the Miami-Dade County Democrat’s re-election campaign, which she launched more than two years ago.
Forty-two individual donors contributed between $4.50 and $1,000, the maximum amount allowable. Her average individual donation was $146. In May, all 47 contributions her campaign reported to the Florida Division of Elections came from individual donors.
Taddeo’s fundraising approach tracks with her criticism of and action taken against so-called political “dark money.” Last year, she sued political committee Floridians for Equality and Justice and asked Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle to investigate the PC, which funded attack ads targeting Democratic ally Patricia Sigman in her unsuccessful campaign for a Central Florida Senate seat but did not name its donors.
Miami’s massive construction and development industry comprised most of Taddeo’s corporate and organizational donations last month. Real estate, transportation and infrastructure holding company Florida East Coast Industries, the parent of inter-city rail service Brightline, which is building a new line to Orlando that will link PortMiami and Disney World, gave $3,000.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a trade union with an office in Miami, gave $1,000. So did telecom industry group Florida Internet & Television, which filed a petition this month opposing Florida Power & Light’s plan to raise rates over the next four years.
FPL’s political committee, Nextera Energy, which paid out $37,000 to local and state campaigns and spent $2.2 million on federal races, has not given to Taddeo.
Contributions to Taddeo’s campaign through mid-2020 were mostly $1,000 donations from lobbying and law firms, trade groups, firefighter and transportation worker unions, and Florida-headquartered companies like Publix and automotive group JM Family Enterprises, both of which typically donate significantly more to Republican candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Between January and May, she received a handful of $1,000 donations. Two came from the holding companies of gas station chains.
The $6,239 her campaign spent in June is by far the most it’s exhausted yet in a 30-day period. The next closest was in January 2020, when it spent $560.
Last month’s spending largely went to Orlando-based financial consulting firm Spotlight Strategies, which she paid $3,000; and to NGP Van, a voter database and web-hosting service provider the Democratic Party uses for campaigns, fundraising, finance compliance and organizing. She paid NGP $3,030.
SD 40 in southwest Miami-Dade contains 19 unincorporated neighborhoods, including Kendall, Kendall West, Country Walk, Richmond Heights, Sunset, Tamiami, the Crossing, the Hammocks, Three Lakes, West Perrine and Westchester.
The district has trended purple in recent years, voting in 2016 for Hillary Clinton but also electing Republican Frank Artiles, who resigned a year after a racist tirade.
Taddeo, who had previously run unsuccessfully for local, state and federal offices, bested Republican José Félix Díaz to flip the seat blue in a Special Election in 2017.
A year later, she won reelection by outpacing Republican lawyer Marili Cancio by a 7 percentage point margin.
