FGP Explorers Series

Join the Foundation for Geauga Parks and a Geauga Park District naturalist for a backcountry ravine exploration of Welton’s Gorge, 13973 Hale Road in Burton. Be prepared for a rugged, strenuous hike that will be held rain or shine.

Aug. 8, 2-4 p.m.
Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and the Loss Team will host the first annual Remembrance Day at the Rookery, 10110 Cedar Road in Chardon. A celebration in memoriam of loved ones, join for a hot dog picnic, butterfly release and support from the community. Bring a photo of a loved one to share, honor and celebrate at the memory table.

Concert On The Square
Aug. 10, 7 p.m.
Thompson Township continues its Concerts on the Square with the Geauga County Fair Band. Refreshments will be provided by Thompson Garden Club; donations will be accepted. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
Stop by the arts, crafts and farmer’s market beginning at 5 p.m. before the concert at the north end of the square. Crafters and participants are welcome. Table cost is $5 or bring one’s own. Contact Audrey Kerr 440-862-0043 for more information or to reserve a table.
VFW Wednesday Dinners
Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m.
Chardon VFW Post 6519 will serve Italian sausage sandwiches with a side of tater-tots every Wednesday in August at the post located at 752 Water St. Donation is $8. The public is welcome.
GSWCD Conservation Crusaders
Aug. 11, 7-8 p.m.
Geauga SWCD continues its Conservation Crusaders program with Bats Incredible at the Natural Resources Pavilion of the Geauga County Fairgrounds.
Children of all ages accompanied by an adult may join the free, outdoor program to learn all about the superpowers of bats.

Kiwanis Summer Concert Series

The Kiwanis Club of West Geauga’s 38th annual summer concert series at the Chester Township Park gazebo continues with Ted Riser, aka the Music Man, performing a blend of Southern rock, country and blues while playing five instruments. In the event of rain, the concert will be canceled.

American Legion Chicken Barbecue

Newbury American Legion Post 663 is hosting its annual chicken Texas style chicken barbecue at the post located at 11008 Kinsman Road, Newbury. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

Chicken BBQ and Car Show
Aug. 15, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
SS Edward and Lucy Parish will host the 12th annual Chicken Barbecue and Car Show, rain or shine, at 16150 Center St. in Parkman. Event features classic cars and trucks, Chinese auction, raffles, bingo, DJ Cory and family horse racing.
Tickets for the barbecue chicken dinner are $14 for adults and $6 for children 10 and under.
Donation of $10 requested for car show entries. Goodie bags and dash plaques given to first 100 cars. Three prizes will be awarded along with a $200 gas card, compliments of Best Funeral Home. Drawing at 4 p.m. Winner must be present.
Chinese auction early bird tickets go on sale Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 400 items to bid on, with the drawing at 6 p.m.; winner need not be present.

Aug. 28, noon to 10 p.m.
Bainbridge Civic Club’s Ox Roast is now Bainbridge Rox, an all day event featuring live music, children’s entertainment area, a casino with a Texas Hold’em tournament, four different food trucks in addition to the BBC ox roast, a gourmet frozen desert offering and a beer tent.
The event takes place at Centerville Mills Park, 8558 Crackel Road in Bainbridge Township. There is no admission fee and parking is free.
Local businesses and artists wishing to promote their business and sell their arts, crafts and jewelry may set up an exhibition table for $50; contact Mark George at 440-591-1819.
Proceeds benefit student scholarships, Bainbridge Food for Friends food pantry and philanthropic donations to community programs.

LGC Heritage Program
Leadership Geauga County is offering special community classes for retirees regarding community engagement and networking opportunities. Retirees will learn how to define their next life chapter while engaging with like-minded individuals in making a difference in the community.
