KENNETH MARK RUTHERFORD Sept. 10, 1952 – Aug. 11, 2021
Ken Rutherford, 68, a long time Los Alamos resident, passed away after a fall in the driveway. He lived with Parkinson’s in recent years, but he never let it slow his sense of humor and kind-natured love for all.
He was born in 1952 to Perry and Rita Rutherford in the then-closed city of Los Alamos. He graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1970.
His many adventures in life included ski-bumming in Colorado, working construction, as a licensed Realtor, building a solar adobe home in La Mesilla, running Allied Foods, and playing Tavern League Poker. After the Cerro Grande Fire he rebuilt two family homes on the property that has been in the family since 1950.
Ken was well-known for his generosity and hospitality. Family, friends, community service, peace, and the sanctity of life were always his priorities. He gave many their first job; teaching lifelong skills of strong work ethics, customer service, teamwork, and integrity.
His favorite activities were skiing, fishing, enjoying live music, making and enjoying good food, and catching up with old friends. He was gifted with an insatiable need to invent, even in his later years he spent his days and nights working on his latest inventions.
Ken was preceded in death by father (Thomas) Perry in 1982, mother Rumanie Julia “Rita” in 2011, brothers Thomas David in 1958 and Joseph Alvin in 1968, brother-in-law Raul Reyes (Bob) in 2020, and grandniece August Ophelia Gilbert in 2021.
He is survived by his son (Kenneth) Perry; grandsons Aidan Monteith and Christopher of Los Alamos; daughter Jessica Callico (Brian), grandchildren Haley, Joseph, Tyson and Camryn in Colorado; sister Lizabeth, OSF, brothers Pat, Don (Elizabeth), Bob, Vic (Ann), many cousins, nieces, nephews, his former spouse and the mother of his children Mary Carlson of Jemez Springs, and many dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
A memorial service will be held at Guaje Pines Cemetery on September 10 at 2:00pm.
