Real estate donations will change the playground in Forlot Park

LIMA — Faurot Park’s Bear Pit Playground will finally be refurbished over two years, thanks to nearly $ 500,000 in real estate donations to Lima’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Lima’s Deputy Public Works Director, Rick Story, said he and Mayor David Berger were surprised when he received a call that Gloria Jean’s Lawrence had died in 2019. He didn’t know her and she didn’t live in Lima for several years. However, her love for the area was never lost. About a year later, a representative of her real estate traveled from Florida to Lima and talked about what the city could do to use her gifts.

“This gal loved Lima,” Stree said. “She used to come from this area. She and her husband lived in Florida for years. She always wanted to go back to Lima, so she didn’t have a chance, but she always I remembered Lima. “

Donations are primarily aimed at transforming the playground into an all-inclusive area with new equipment and facilities. Construction is already underway to convert a nearby warehouse into a playground toilet.

“Through the whole process, I found that my parents and grandparents no longer came to the park to sit on the bench and read the paper. They want to get involved,” Stree said. “So there are some interactive devices out there for those people who help motivate them to come to the park when they want to come too.”

Stolly also said he hopes some of the new equipment will be installed by the end of the year, but due to the weather, spring 2022 is a more realistic completion date. He also recognized the importance of maximizing respect for Mrs. Lawrence’s wishes.

“Obviously, you want to meet the wishes of your donors, but if you can, you also want to exceed those wishes,” he said. “A gift of this size will be a game changer, and will improve the quality of life of people inside and outside the region, and honestly, it will be a destination.”

Lima’s Deputy Public Works Director, Rick Story, talks at a press conference with the mayor on Wednesday about the improvements that will be made to Forlot Park’s Barepit Playground thanks to a $ 498,000 real estate donation to the park and recreation sector. Did.
