Work to begin soon on new Monroe Humane Society

Work could begin as soon as August on the Humane Society of Monroe County’s new complex.

In mid-June, the Humane Society received a special use permit from Frenchtown Township to prepare the 31-acre site located on N. Monroe St., near the Memory Lane Drive-In (formerly Denniston Theater).

Permits were granted from Michigan Department of Transportation and The Michigan Department of Environmental, Great Lakes Engineering and Energy (EGLE).

“We sailed through the permit,” said Madonna Burkit, executive director. “There is something coming.”

The permit gives the Humane Society up to three years to build Phases 1 and 2 of its complex.

In 2013, the Humane Society purchased the land to replace its current facility at 833 N. Telegraph Rd. in Monroe. A feasibility study was completed by Hammond & Associates LLC. It was learned the property includes wetland area, and plans had to be reworked.
